Klean Industries Selects Chemex Global to Support Deployment of Flagship Tire Pyrolysis Project
VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Oct. 11, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Klean Industries Inc. (“Klean”), a leading tire pyrolysis equipment manufacturer and project developer, is pleased to announce that selected Chemex Global, LLC, a subsidiary of The Shaw Group, LLC, to design, procure and manufacture Klean’s 20,000 MT hydrocarbon upgrading system for its Boardman, Oregon project. Both parties intend to execute the design-build contract, which includes process and schedule guarantees, in the first quarter of 2023.
The Boardman facility will convert end-of-life tires (ELTs) otherwise destined for landfill or incineration into high-value products such as a reclaimed carbon black (rCB) used as a replacement for new carbon blacks and recovered fuel oil (rFO) which is blended with carbon black oil (CBO) for use in the creation of new, virgin bio-based carbon blacks. This is a significant step forward in developing circularity within the carbon black and tire manufacturing industries, while respecting environmental, social and governance (ESG) mandates. Additional attributes include noticeable reductions in carbon emissions while significantly improving the production of virgin carbon blacks, as rFO contains approximately 35%-40% bio-based content, which is the result of natural rubber found in tires worn.
Chemex Global will supply a modular pyrolysis oil condensation and fractionation system and control systems. This system includes facilitating the integration of its technology and equipment into the overall facility for converting recovered pyrolysis oil. The pyrolysis oil is condensed and then split into two streams of which approximately 85% is a hydrocarbon product of similar quality to 1% VLSFO and 15% is a naphtha type product. The lighter naphtha product is intended for the California market for Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) compliant applications for the creation of low carbon on-road fuels, diesel and other fuel products. value. In addition, Chemex Global will fully commission the oil upgrading unit.
Manufacturing of the modular oil upgrading system will be performed by Chemex Global’s parent company, The Shaw Group, at its facilities across the United States, including its state-of-the-art 440,000 square foot module plant in Lake Charles and its pipe manufacturing facilities. in Walker, Louisiana, and El Dorado, Arkansas.
“It has taken some time to find the right partners for Klean’s projects who have the depth of experience necessary for the rapid deployment of our integrated resource recovery projects. Our projects are capital intensive and require solutions cost-effective and highly technical companies that can deliver output products on a guaranteed basis. With over 40 additional projects in development, we believe that Chemex offers the solutions that best fit our time and budget and we are looking to expand this relationship to develop more projects together,” said Jesse Klinkhamer, CEO of Klean Industries Inc.
“Our diverse engineering capabilities combined with world-class manufacturing assets allowed us to assess the project and minimize field execution wherever possible while maintaining project development plans on schedule. We look forward to further expanding our presence in the pyrolysis oil space in particular and the waste-to-energy space in general, where we believe we will quickly establish a leading position in the market due to our ability to provide turnkey execution on a very expedited basis,” added Matt Rodgers, Chief Commercial Officer, Chemex Global.
