Life as a member of the Oakland Garbage Blitz Crew
Ayinde Osayaba and David Conti Jr. have seen it all. Millions of dollars in printed counterfeit bills. Emptied ATMs. Satanic boxes with pentagrams, spell books and dead animals. Some people threatened to kill them and others begged them to save their lives. For the members of the Oakland Garbage Blitz team, this is all part of the job.
This is because Osayaba and Conti are part of a unique 15-person rapid response team, or “Garbage Blitz Crew, Which tackles the illegal dumping in Oakland. To tackle the city’s persistent litter problem, they are proactively visiting known hot spots in east and west Oakland, areas where debris is “out of control.” Handling 30,000 requests per year and treating between one and two kilos of waste per day, the duo are busy. It’s dirty, tough, and emotionally taxing work, but someone has to do it.
