Novato Rotarians launch storm drain awareness project
NOVATO, CA – Rotarians in Novato are doing their part to keep the area’s waterways clean.
Earlier this month, volunteers from four local Rotary clubs began to set up “No emptying – Drains to the bay“Medallions to the storm sewers of downtown Novato.
The medallions aim to draw attention to the importance of removing waste and harmful liquids from these water catchment basins.
The project is carried out in partnership with the city.
“Although we are going through a historic drought, anything that enters storm sewers, including garbage, animal waste and liquids, drains directly into local creeks, the San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean, ”Gretchen Schubeck, Novato’s sustainability coordinator, said in a statement. declaration.
“Raising awareness in the community about the need to keep pollution away from our storm sewers is essential at any time of the year, and we are grateful to the Rotary clubs of Novato for being ready to get involved in helping to educate the public on this important issue by installing stormwater medallions. “.
Rotary International recently announced the addition of a seventh focus area: Environmental protection and Rotary Club of Novato has formed a Planet Earth Team (NR-PET), whose members focus on sustainability, local environmental education and volunteer projects, including the Stormwater Medallion Project and other PET projects planned for this year .
The Stormwater Medallion Installation Project is a county-wide initiative facilitated by Marin County Stormwater Pollution Prevention Program (MCSTOPPP), a collaboration between the 11 towns and villages of Marin, Marin County and the Marin County Flood Control and Water Conservation District, founded in 1993 and coordinated locally by the Department of city public works.
Melanie Fraley, Public Works staff member and Novato Stormwater Program Coordinator, supports the volunteers in the project.
