An investigation is underway after the discovery of what appears to be a carcass in a service road in Mutley.

Andrea Johnson, Compton’s independent advisor, made the disgusting discovery on Wednesday January 5th.

She shared photos that appear to show bones that appear to be part of a rib cage in a plastic box that were thrown in the area.

A spokesperson for Plymouth City Council confirmed that officers attended the scene and an investigation is underway.

Cllr Johnson called for CCTV to catch the responsible dumpsters.

She said: “This is yet another example of the dreadful tipping of flies in Mutley. And how CCTV is needed to catch the culprits in the act.

“I’m leaving in 2022 to fight the same issues of dumping and environmental crime. “

Cllr Johnson posted on Facebook about the incident: “This is the first time I have come across what appears to be a flytip carcass!

“As a public health hazard, this article was brought to the attention of the Env health team. The Garbage Fairy will not magically remove this item and it should be disposed of responsibly. “

A spokesperson for Plymouth City Council said: “We are aware of this incident and officers have attended the scene. We will now conduct an investigation with a view to further environmental enforcement action. “

How to report a spill

The Plymouth City Council website reads: “The illegal dumping of garbage is called the dumping of garbage. We will clean it up within 10 days of reporting it, or within 24 hours if it contains hazardous waste like needles.

“If the trash is on private land, you can either pick it up yourself or call 01752 668000 for a quote for Plymouth City Council to pick up.

“Spilling flies is an environmental crime, just like litter, not cleaning up your dog’s mess and posting flies. Examples of fly spills in Plymouth are below – if you are caught in the act of spilling flies you could face a fixed penalty notice of £ 400. To find out more, click here.
