Tap water reaches India’s highest village in Himachal

Shimla, July 3 (IANS): Tashigang, a hamlet at an elevation of 15,256ft in the scenic Spiti Valley and close to the Indochina border, has been provided with working house connections, officials said on Sunday.

This village in the Lahaul-Spiti district is located at the highest altitude in India.

The state government has achieved the one hundred percent target of providing Functioning Domestic Tap Connections (FHTC) in four districts – Una, Chamba, Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti under the Jal Jeevan mission and has achieved the goal of 93.05 percent, according to an official state statement. says the government.

So far, 24 blocks, 2,331 gram panchayats and 14,661 villages have been fully covered by the Jal Jeevan mission, he said.

In the past two and a half years, 8.44 lakh households received tap connections, while in the past 72 years, only 7.63 lakh households received connections, according to the statement.

As part of the mission, Rs 4,418.37 crore has been allocated by the Indian government to the state, including an incentive of Rs 1,028.43 crore, he said.

Water supply was provided to 411 settlements comprising 22,763 houses in the remote district of Kinnaur. As part of the mission, 219 projects were approved in the district, of which 155 projects were completed.

In another remote district of Lahaul-Spiti, water supply was given to 364 dwellings comprising 7,284 houses. Seven programs are implemented in the district. The total estimated cost of the works being executed is Rs 122 crore.

Chamba district was selected as an ambitious district by NITI Aayog. In this district, including the tribal sub-divisions of Pangi and Bharmour, work is underway on Rs 420 crore projects.

The target of 100% coverage was achieved by providing functional connections to 121,752 households in the district, the statement said.

Under the Jal Jeevan mission, participation of women has been ensured in the district in resource selection, project execution and field water testing for which the district has been appreciated by the Indian government .

In Una district, 15 schemes costing Rs 196 crore are being implemented. The one hundred percent target of providing functional connections to all 115,949 houses in the district has been achieved.

“In the assessment carried out by the Government of India in 2020-2021, Himachal Pradesh was ranked as the best in terms of overall efficiency in terms of the quantity and quality of drinking water available at the consumer level”, says the press release.

“Availability of quality water supply at consumer level has improved the standard of living and health conditions. Dependence on water from natural sources has decreased, saving money time to people and they are now using their time to earn a living,” he said. .
